After a season of speculation and record-breaking performances, Mohamed Salah has officially ended months of uncertainty by signing a two-year contract extension with Liverpool, keeping him at Anfield until 2027. The 32-year-old Egyptian forward, who had been linked with big-money moves to Saudi Arabia and Paris Saint-Germain, confirmed that the possibility of a summer exit was very real until negotiations finally reached a breakthrough in April.
Salah didn’t shy away from expressing his frustration during the season, admitting he felt “more out than in” at times. In January, he even hinted that the 2024–25 campaign might be his last in a Liverpool shirt. But the Premier League title win under new manager Arne Slot appears to have changed everything.
“It was a possibility, yes,” Salah told France Football. “It was actually a bit strange; we were doing really well this season, and there was this negotiation that wasn’t easy. In the end, all’s well that ends well: we’re champions, and I’m staying for two more seasons.”
That “uncertainty,” as Salah calls it, may have spurred one of the greatest individual seasons in Premier League history. He tallied an astonishing 28 goals and 18 assists in the league alone breaking the record for most goal involvements in a 38-game season and finished with 33 goals and 23 assists across all competitions.
Voted Footballer of the Year by an overwhelming 90% of football writers, Salah became only the second player in history after Thierry Henry to win the award three times. Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold also played key roles in the title triumph, but it was Salah’s brilliance that carried Liverpool over the line.
Reflecting on the journey, Salah said, “The possibility that it would be my last season here perhaps gave me the desire to make the most of it and to give everything to win this title that I had promised. If the club didn’t want to extend my contract, no worries let’s finish as well as possible so that I leave through the front door.”
Instead, Salah stays and Liverpool, now champions and with their talisman secured, will be strong contenders for a record 21st English league title next season.
