Manchester United’s turbulent Premier League campaign hit a new low today as they suffered a 4-3 defeat to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. Despite a pair of late stunners from Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo, the result extended United’s winless run to six games and left manager Ruben Amorim admitting that “pride” is now all his side has left to fight for.
Amorim, prioritizing next week’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Athletic Club, named the youngest starting XI in United’s Premier League history. Among the debutants was 17-year-old Chido Obi, who made his first senior start just months after joining from Arsenal’s academy. But the youthful side struggled against a Brentford team full of intent and confidence, with Kevin Schade delivering a standout performance.
United opened the scoring against the run of play in the 14th minute. Alejandro Garnacho, one of the few bright spots in the visitors’ lineup, set up Mason Mount to tap in his second goal for the club both of which have now come against Brentford.
Brentford responded swiftly and deservedly turned the game on its head before the break. Mikkel Damsgaard’s scrappy effort, which deflected off Luke Shaw and wrong-footed Altay Bayindir, brought the Bees level. Minutes later, Schade headed in Christian Norgaard’s cross while Matthijs de Ligt was down injured a decision that sparked controversy as the hosts refused to stop play.
The second half brought no reprieve for United. Brentford continued to threaten, and Schade added a second header to his tally in the 70th minute after being left unmarked in the box. Just four minutes later, Yoane Wissa slotted in the fourth following an intricate move that shredded United’s makeshift defense.
Late goals from Garnacho and Diallo both impressive solo efforts gave United a glimmer of hope in the dying minutes. Garnacho curled a beautiful strike into the top corner, while Diallo beat Flekken at the near post with a clever shot. But it was too little, too late.
For Brentford, the result was both cathartic and significant. It marked only their second victory in 13 league meetings with United and moved them into the top half of the table. Schade was rightly named Flashscore’s Man of the Match after tormenting United’s back line throughout.
As the final whistle blew, United were left to reflect on another chaotic afternoon. With their hopes in the league fading fast, Ruben Amorim will now hope his gamble on youth pays off in Europe the only arena where silverware remains a possibility this season.
